    A “defictionalized” object is one that has been taken from the world of fiction and made real, sort of like Second Life in reverse. The phrase came to my attention by way of Kottke.org’s guest blogger Adam Lisagor’s post on the subject. A t-shirt company called Last Exit to Nowhere has “a collection of unique shirt designs which are inspired and pay homage to some of the most memorable places, corporations and companies in 20th century fiction,” like this one for the Overlook Hotel, a key location in a movie I’m quite partial to, The Shining. Cool Hunting may have a more notable example in trying to lobby Adidas to have Steve Zissou’s kicks put into production. Even spaces can be defictionalized: a new book about the architecture in Hitchcock’s films provides reconstructed floor plans to the spaces author Steven Jacobs analyses. Of course, defictionalization is not a new phenomenon. Since the 1930s, the Royal Mail had been delivering letters for Sherlock Holmes to his address at 221B Baker Street, first the site of the Abbey National Building Society and now home to the Sherlock Holmes Museum.
