Khoi Vinh’s great AIGA National Conference mainstage talk on “Control” is available online. One of my favorite quotes from Khoi’s talk is the observation that “if narrative is the guiding principle of traditional [print] design, then control is its most important tool. But the most important tool of interactive media is not control—it’s behavior.” Khoi also distinguishes between “documents,” which he imbues with the attributes of print or traditional design, and “conversations,” which he imbues with the attributes of interactive media. A useful source he cites in unpacking the complex interdependancy of documents and conversations is the work of legendary hacker and activist Richard Stallman. Khoi also makes use of Eric S. Raymond’s terms “cathedral” and “bazaar,” which Raymond develops in a book by the same title. Raymond’s newest book, “Homesteading the Noosphere,” includes a chapter on “The Hacker Milieu as Gift Culture.”
